Motivation letter vs SOP: Motivation Letter vs SOP vs Personal Statement: Differences
Motivation letter vs SOP: A motivation letter, a statement of purpose and a personal statement are not the same. Learn what each one is, which scholarships ask for them and how to structure each in the right way.

Applications often use these three names almost interchangeably, which creates confusion. They overlap, but the focus is different. Reading the exact prompt and word limit is always your first step.

The differences in a table

Motivation letter Explains why you want this specific programme or scholarship and why you are a good fit. Common for European programmes such as Erasmus Mundus and DAAD.
Statement of purpose (SOP) Focuses on your academic and research goals: what you studied, what you will research and your career plan. Common for US and research degrees.
Personal statement Tells your personal story: experiences, values and growth that shaped you. Common for UK applications and some scholarships.

A simple structure that works for all three

  1. Opening: a specific moment or clear claim, not a cliché.
  2. Background: your studies and key achievements with numbers.
  3. Fit: why this programme, this university and this scholarship.
  4. Plan: your goals during and after the programme.
  5. Closing: one confident line about the contribution you will make.
